Getting into a top-tier summer research program can be harder than getting into Harvard. Programs like RSI (Research Science Institute) have acceptance rates below 5%. The key differentiator is often the application essays.
Defining the Problem
When proposing a research topic, be specific. 'I want to cure cancer' is too broad. 'I want to investigate the effect of protein X on pathway Y in lung cancer cells' shows you understand the scientific method. Admissions officers look for feasibility and clarity.
The Personal Statement
Show your intellectual curiosity. Don't just say you are smart; describe the time you took apart the microwave to see how it worked, or the code you wrote to automate your homework. Passion must be tangible.
